Cataract Diagnosis

Cataracts are diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam. This involves multiple tests, such as:

• A visual acuity test that measures your vision at different distances.
• A dilated eye exam involves eye drops to dilate and examine your pupils.
• A slit-lamp exam uses a bright light microscope to examine the cornea, iris, and lens.
• A retinal exam involves the examination of the back of the eye.
• A tonometry that measures the pressure inside your eye.

Your doctor may ask about your lifestyle and medical family history.

During Cataract Surgery

Once your eye specialist determines that cataract surgery is an ideal treatment for your cataract case, you will be scheduled for your procedure.

The clouded lens is removed and replaced with an implant during cataract surgery. To do this, your doctor may perform one of the following procedures:

• Ultrasound: During this procedure, your surgeon will make a small incision in the cornea and insert a small probe into your cataract. Ultrasound waves are transmitted through this device, breaking up the cataract. The fragments are then suctioned using the same probe, and the artificial lens is placed. 
• Incision: This procedure is sometimes used for really advanced and dense cataracts. It involves a larger incision to remove the cloudy lens that comprises the cataract. Once the artificial lens is placed, stitches will be used to close out the incision. 

After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a routine procedure that typically takes around 30 minutes to complete. Patients can usually go home immediately after the surgery. However, you are required to have someone to drive you home afterwards, as you will have received Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAS) during the surgery. Keep in mind that you also will not be able to drive for a few days following the procedure.

Your doctor will give detailed recovery instructions to ensure successful healing. These may involve taking a few days of rest, refraining from physical activities, and using prescribed medications or eye drops.

Your eyelid and the area surrounding the eyebrow can have skin and structural alterations due to aging, physical trauma, tumors, or thyroid diseases. Depending on the root cause of your condition, your eye specialist may suggest undergoing eyelid surgery to recover functionality and return your confidence.   

During Eyelid Surgery

Before the skin removal is done, your doctor will apply a local anesthetic for your comfort.

During your eyelid surgery, your doctor will remove any excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. This excess skin often prevents the eye from having proper vision and alters the physical appearance of the face.

Once the procedure is complete, the incision made in the skin will be closed with stitches. 

After Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is a common and fast procedure that doesn’t require much recovery time. Your eye doctor will suggest general resting for some days post-surgery. You need to follow the cleaning instructions they provided you with. 

Visiting your doctor for follow-ups after the procedure is advised since keeping track of your progress will help identify any complications promptly if they show up.

The eye can become easily damaged by cuts, scratches, burns, chemicals, and objects. Injuries of this type need attention immediately since leaving them unattended may lead to irreversible vision damage. 

Also, multiple illnesses and infections may prevent proper vision and could cause swelling, eye redness, and pain.

Types of Eye Illnesses, Injuries, and Infections

Some of the illnesses, injuries, and infections that could harm the eyes include:

• Injuries due to trauma, foreign object penetration, cuts, scratches, or chemicals 
• Conjunctivitis is a condition that causes blood vessels to become dilated, causing redness and swelling around the eye. 
• Keratitis, also known as corneal ulcer, is a bacterial infection common in contact lens users that causes eye pain and blurred vision.

What Happens During the Treatment for Eye Illnesses, Injuries, and Infections

Treatment for eye illnesses, injuries, and infections will depend on the extent of the damage and the type of issue suffered. Your doctor may perform eye irrigation to remove any foreign objects, dust, or debris causing pain. 

If an injury or chemical has further damaged your eye, your doctor may suggest performing an eye surgery. This eye surgery will focus on restoring any corneal, retinal, or skin damage caused.

Common procedures include topical antibiotics and eye drops for infections like conjunctivitis or keratitis.
